Job Description

The Bus Driver is responsible for transporting and chaperoning (as required) residents, staff, and volunteers on outings. The Bus Driver assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors, and staff

SCHEDULE: This is a temporary position, to cover an anticipated two (2) month medical leave, starting from approximately May 5, 2026 until July 5, 2026 (or longer, depending on the incumbent's return. The is every Wednesday, 9:30am-3:30pm.

WAGE: $28-$30/hour depending on experience.

Job Details

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure that residents are transported safely to and from their destinations.
  2. Maintains the bus in a neat and clean manner, ensuring all safety features are in good repair.
  3. Ensures regular maintenance checks are performed on the vehicle.
  4. Ensures pre and post checks are performed at every outing
  5. Accesses appropriate emergency assistance for residents as required.
  6. Assists passengers on and off the bus and ensures they are seated in a safe and proper manner.
  7. Assists transporting residents in wheelchairs.
  8. Liaises with staff regarding attendees of outings.
  9. Acts as a chaperone on outings when required.
  10. Loads and unloads equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  11. Responds to resident and/or family members’ concerns and ensures appropriate action is taking within decision-making authority and/or brings it to the attention of the General Manager.
  12. Maintains a professional relationship with residents, staff, and volunteers.
  13. Demonstrates an appreciation and understanding of the background and needs of individual residents.
  14. Communicates and interacts with residents, family members, visitors, staff, and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner.
  15. Conducts duties in accordance with VRS policies and procedures, as well as government regulations, laws, and policies.
  16. Understands and follows all health and safety policies and procedures.
  17. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, staff, volunteers, and residents.
  18. Reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations in a promptly manner to the General Manager.
  19. Completes seat belt checks.
  20. Completes safety check on bus before all outings.
  21. Maintains confidentiality of resident’s personal information.
  22. Maintains fluid and gas levels in the bus and monitors bus for routine and unscheduled maintenance.
  23. Accurately completes required documentation at the end of each trip.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be skilled at problem-solving, including being able to identify issues and resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction, and must be able to provide performance through management feedback.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relations by displaying tact, courtesy and patience with residents, volunteers, and staff.
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to bend and squat, to strap wheelchairs in position.
  • Must be in excellent health and free of communicable diseases.

EDUCATION/TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:

  • Current Class 4 Drivers License with Bus Certification.
  • Clear Drivers Abstract record from the Motor Vehicle Branch.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Minimum 1 year experience driving/operating a Class 4 vehicle.
  • Experience working and/or volunteering with seniors is an asset.
  • Must be able to speak English fluently and communicate effectively both verbally and in the composition of written materials.
  • Must pass a Criminal Record Check.
  • Must carry a cell phone at every outing

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work may occur in extreme weather conditions and require the rescheduling of planned outings/activities due to conditions (as Directed by the General Manager). In this event, the Bus Driver may perform and assist with other duties and activities at the site.
  • Must be physically and mentally alert.
  • The incumbent must be able to push substantial weight
